                   OUR TRIP TO MILESTONES MUSEUM

On Thursday 27th November 2014 Years 1 and 2 visited the Milestones Museum in Basingstoke.
The children had an enjoyable drive up and were eager to get in to see what the Museum was all about.

Session one -  'TOYS'

The children were divided into five groups and each was given an activity to take part in.  The session mainly focused on looking at toys from the past and comparing them to the toys from the present.
We sorted lots of old and new toys according to their age, material and value to us.

We learnt to handle these toys with care by washing our hands and using both hands to lift them.

Toy timeline activity - here the children were invited to find a place for some toys on the Toy Timeline Mat, these toys had been played with over the last 100 years.

The Toy Box - this box was full of all kinds of toys, some broken, some old, some cuddly.  Children were encouraged to sort the toys out from giving them to a museum, giving them to a car boot sale, throwing them away or keeping them.

There were lots of interesting choices made!

For Ever - This box contained some of the most precious toys, the oldest toy was 150 years old and was made of bone. Here the children were encouraged to think about how we look after these collections for the children in the future.

Old and New - Many popular games and toys have been copied during the last hundred years.  Children were encouraged to use pair mats to match old and new toys and discuss ways in which they had changed or remained the same.

Super Sorting - A mixture of toys were provided to the children with a range of criteria for sorting them out using the Venn diagram mat.

After a much needed break for lunch we all moved on to the next session:

Session two  - 'DISCOVERY'

We were transported back in time to the 1930s/40s and enjoyed dressing up and walking the streets as if we lived in that time.

Children had the chance to explore the domestic objects in Collections Corner

and use the I Spy Trail to find typical features of a 1930s street.

Once we had finished the Discovery session we had some free time to visit the other areas of the building and walk around in the Victorian streets and look in all the shops.

Year 1 and 2 had a wonderful day exploring the museum and had lots to talk about on the way home.
