Autumn Term Science - Being Healthy

Year 1 and 2 have had a very busy term learning all about how to live healthily in their Science and PSHE lessons. They have learnt a lot about making sure they eat healthily, looking at how to use the Eatwell Plate to help them see whether they are eating a balanced diet or not.

They also designed their own healthy lunchboxes and in DT designed healthy fruit and vegetable plates to try and get younger children to enjoy eating more of their 5 a day. Their designs clearly worked, as all of their designs were eaten in a matter of minutes!

After this they started to think about how they can keep their teeth healthy. They learnt all about how their mouths and teeth change as they grow older, and had great fun taking disclosing tablets to see how much plaque has built up on their teeth during the day. The children certainly loved having bright pink mouths before they thought about the things they needed to remember to make sure they brushed their teeth properly!

They were also really lucky to get a visit from Dental Hygienist Laura and Dental Nurse Katherine, from Appledore Dental Clinic, who came in to talk to the children. The children enjoyed some dental role play where they got to use dental equipment to check each other’s teeth. The ‘dentists’ then gave their patients some advice about how to brush their teeth properly using what they’d learnt. (photos)

Laura and Katherine also taught the children about how much sugar is in different foods and how this can cause plaque to build up on our teeth. They learnt that if we eat too many sugary foods, this can lead to tooth decay which can cause cavities (holes) in our teeth!

So if you ever need any advice about how to look after yourself and stay healthy, just come and see the Year 1's and 2's at Newbold!

1950's Day in Year 1 and 2

Year 1 and 2 traveled back in time as they role played a 1950's school day.
Having come to school in great costumes, the children lined up before being allowed to enter their classroom.

They were met by a more severe Mrs Chilvers who instructed the children to sit at individual tables without speaking.

All the children obediently found their seats and sat focused and upright without being asked. The sight of a long ruler and the warning that any fidgeting would result in standing facing the wall made for a very attentive class.
After completing a spelling test and copied sentence, the children were somewhat rearranged to reflect how well they had spelt.

It was interesting to see how the children reacted to these changes. Many of the class said they liked sitting independently and in silence.

The formality lightened up as we talked more about the differences between 1950's school and today. We were grateful for a visit from Mrs Porter during which children were encouraged to ask questions about how life was.

This demonstrated just how interested and enthusiastic they were.

After a short 1950's BBC music and movement lesson the class relaxed and had fun as they danced and sang to ‘Rock around the clock’. An exhausting but fun day for all.
